Why the restaurant is called Steinbeck’s

In March 1940 John Steinbeck sailed into the Gulf of California aboard the sardine boat Western Flyer with the marine biologist Ed Ricketts, collecting specimens along the coast. La Paz was one of their stops. The trip produced Sea of Cortez and later The Log from the Sea of Cortez, and the pearl-diving story he heard here became the novella The Pearl.

Naming the grill after him is not decoration. It is a reminder that the water in front of the restaurant is one of the most-studied and most-written-about marine environments on the continent — and that the fish on the plate came out of it.

Eating beyond the resort

Ten minutes down the road, La Paz has one of the better casual food scenes on the peninsula, and it is worth at least two evenings of your trip.

  • Fish and shrimp tacos from the stands around the Malecón and the municipal market — battered, fried to order, dressed with cabbage, crema and salsa.
  • Almejas chocolatas, the local chocolate clams, cooked on the half shell over coals.
  • Ceviche and aguachile, the second considerably hotter than the first.
  • Machaca de pescado, dried and shredded fish, usually at breakfast with eggs.
  • Burritos percherón, the outsized Sonoran flour burrito that turns up on beach club menus around the bay.
  • Damiana liqueur, distilled from the local herb, poured after dinner or built into a Baja margarita.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need a reservation at Steinbeck's?

For dinner in high season, yes. Ask at reception or call the resort on +52 (612) 123 6000. It is an open-air room over the marina, so it fills earlier on still evenings.

Is there anywhere to eat outside the resort nearby?

The Puerta Cortés complex includes Pueblito Marinero, a small cluster of dining options a short walk away. Downtown La Paz and the Malecón restaurants are about ten minutes by car.

Is breakfast included?

It depends on your rate. Mosaic serves a buffet breakfast daily; whether it is bundled into your room rate depends on the package you book. Check the rate description before confirming.
